Franz Rentel

Franz Rentel is the Director of Carbon Projects Africa. He has over 20 years’ experience developing and structuring carbon offset projects across Africa and internationally, spanning renewable energy, household energy, waste, and nature-based solutions — with more than 30 projects sourced or developed globally.
Franz works at the intersection of voluntary carbon markets and South Africa’s carbon tax framework, structuring offset transactions for emitters navigating compliance obligations under the Carbon Tax Act. He leads Anthesis’s AgriCarbon™ programme, one of South Africa’s first registered and issued agricultural soil carbon programmes under Verra.
He holds a degree in Biochemistry, an MSc in Environmental Management, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Executive Management, and is the founder and an executive member of the Southern Africa Carbon Markets Association.

Franz is a carbon markets and sustainability professional with over 20 years of experience in sourcing, structuring, and developing carbon offset projects. His expertise spans carbon management, deal structuring, and financial analysis, reinforcing his belief that market mechanisms are essential in addressing the climate crisis. As Managing Director of Anthesis South Africa, he specialises in developing carbon offset projects and trading carbon credits. He is dedicated to leveraging carbon finance across Africa, with a focus on nature-based solutions
